Low-Tox Living Without the Overwhelm: 5 Simple Swaps for a Healthier Home
If you’ve ever found yourself standing in the cleaning aisle wondering what half the ingredients are, you’re not alone.
As awareness around health and wellbeing grows, more families are becoming curious about what they’re bringing into their homes, putting on their skin, and feeding their children. And while the idea of “low-tox living” can sometimes feel overwhelming, it doesn’t have to be.
The truth is, you don’t need to throw everything out overnight or strive for a perfectly chemical-free lifestyle (spoiler alert: that’s impossible anyway!).
Low-tox living is simply about becoming more aware of everyday exposures and making small, practical changes where you can.
At The Family Chiro, we’re passionate about helping families thrive. While chiropractic care focuses on supporting nervous system function, we know that health is influenced by many factors—including sleep, movement, nutrition, stress levels, and the environment we live in every day.
If you’re curious about where to start, here are five simple areas worth considering.
1. Take a Closer Look at Fragrance
That fresh-smelling candle, laundry detergent, air freshener, or perfume might smell lovely, but many fragranced products contain a cocktail of synthetic chemicals hidden under the label “fragrance” or “parfum.”
Some of these chemicals have been identified as endocrine disruptors, meaning they may interfere with the body’s hormone systems. This can be particularly relevant for growing children, whose bodies and hormonal systems are still developing.
While it’s impossible to avoid every exposure, reducing unnecessary fragrances throughout the home can be a simple first step.
Simple swaps:
Choose fragrance-free products where possible.
Save perfumes for special occasions or consider reducing their use.
Try a cleaner deodorant such as Noosa Basics, Nuud, or Woohoo.
Open windows regularly for fresh air.
Skip plug-in air fresheners.
Many families find that once artificial fragrances are removed, their homes actually feel fresher and cleaner.
2. Say Goodbye to Old Non-Stick Pans
Have you heard of PFAS?
PFAS (Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances) are often called “forever chemicals” because they break down very slowly and can accumulate in both the environment and our bodies over time.
These chemicals are commonly found in:
Non-stick cookware (including many Teflon-coated pans)
Fast-food wrappers
Waterproof clothing
Stain-resistant furniture and carpets
Some cosmetics
Research suggests PFAS exposure may be associated with impacts on immune, hormonal, and metabolic health.
One of the easiest places to reduce exposure is in the kitchen.
If your non-stick pans are scratched, chipped, or showing signs of wear, it may be time to replace them with stainless steel, cast iron, or ceramic alternatives.
And don’t forget your baking trays. We recently swapped ours for stainless steel trays and they’ve been fantastic—durable, easy to clean, and surprisingly affordable.
(Keep an eye on our socials for our favourite tips on mastering stainless steel cooking!)
3. Filter the Water You Drink Most
Australian tap water is generally safe and highly regulated, which is something we’re fortunate to have.
However, depending on where you live, tap water can still contain varying levels of substances such as chlorine, fluoride, heavy metals from ageing pipes, agricultural runoff, PFAS in some regions, and microplastics.
For this reason, many families choose to filter their drinking water as an extra step.
A quality water filter can be one of the simplest low-tox upgrades for the whole family because water is something we consume every single day.
A Kyn & Folk ceramic filter is a great option to explore, and for local families, filtered water is also available from Organic Feast in Maitland.
4. Be Mindful of Plastics
Let’s be honest—we’ve all reheated leftovers in a plastic container at some point.
However, many plastics contain chemicals such as BPA and phthalates, which are considered potential endocrine disruptors.
These chemicals may migrate into food and drinks, particularly when plastics are heated.
The good news is that reducing exposure doesn’t have to be complicated.
Easy changes:
Avoid microwaving food in plastic containers.
Swap plastic drink bottles for stainless steel or glass.
Store leftovers in glass containers where possible.
Choose fresh, unpackaged foods more often.
Remember, every small swap counts.
5. Focus on Progress, Not Perfection
If there’s one takeaway from this article, let it be this:
Low-tox living isn’t about fear.
It’s not about guilt.
And it’s certainly not about throwing away everything you own and starting again.
Instead, it’s about making informed choices where you can and recognising that small changes add up over time.
Maybe your first step is switching to a fragrance-free laundry detergent.
Maybe it’s investing in a water filter.
Maybe it’s finally replacing that scratched non-stick frying pan.
Whatever your starting point, it matters.
Supporting Health Through Everyday Choices
As chiropractors, we believe the body has an incredible capacity to adapt, heal, and thrive when given the right support.
Alongside regular chiropractic care, nourishing food, movement, quality sleep, and stress management, reducing unnecessary chemical exposures can be another valuable piece of the wellness puzzle.
Creating a healthier home isn’t about doing everything perfectly.
It’s about making small choices, consistently, that help support the wellbeing of the people you love most.
If you’d like support on your family’s health journey, we’d love to welcome you into the practice.
Yours in health,
Morena & The Family Chiro Team
